Ground Aerator Case Study: Newton Green Golf Club

Using the Aeration Jet Ground Aerator at Newton Green Golf Club in Suffolk

Formed in 1907 by its villagers, Newton Green’s unique golf course was situated in the middle of the village green and used the village pub as its clubhouse which they paid for by giving bags of coal to each house in the village at Christmas. With the increase of memberships in 1980 the 9-hole course turned into 18-holes and has been flourishing ever since with its contemporary combination of ancient and modern golf.

Currently Newton Green Golf Club has over 350 playing members and includes a bar, dining room and a lounge area available for private hire.

Ground Aeration of the Putting Greens was Needed to Break up the Clay Pan

Due to the old nature of this course, the clay pop up greens originally designed to hold water started to cause problems. Clay pan is a highly compacted layer of sub soil which has a higher clay content than most surface soils. The clay becomes hard and dense when it dries causing water to collect on the surface.

After pooling water created unplayable conditions for its members meaning the ground aerator was needed. Aeration Jet were called in to aerate the soil and reduce surface runoff. Note that the above picture contains the old branding of Airjet, we have now changed the name to Aeration Jet.

Aeration Jet’s Solution to Compacted Clay Pan on Putting Greens

At Newton Green Golf Club the Aeration Jet was used to aerate the clay pan and drain the water from the putting green which restored the greens back to prime playing conditions. This ground aeration allowed for more playing time for the members in adverse weather.
